Step-by-Step Guide (2025): How Newly Passed CMAs & Students Can Apply for a Passport in India

Updated: Aug 24, 2025

For many newly qualified CMAs, the next step after passing exams is to explore opportunities abroad—be it employment, higher studies, or international conferences. A valid passport is the first requirement. If you are applying for a passport for the first time, the process may appear confusing. Here’s a complete guide to help you arrange your passport smoothly.

1. Registration on Passport Seva Portal

  • Visit the official Passport Seva Portal.

  • Create a new account with your email ID and register under your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) / Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK).

  • Confirm the activation link sent to your email before logging in.

2. Filling the Application Form

  • After login, select “Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport.”

  • Fill in your personal details, address, family details, and references.

  • You may either fill the form online directly or download the PDF form and later upload it.

  • Ensure the details (name, date of birth, address) match your Aadhaar card and educational certificates.

3. Payment of Fees & Appointment Booking

  • Make the payment online via debit/credit card, UPI, net banking, or SBI challan.

    • Normal Passport (36 pages, 10-year validity): ₹1,500

    • Tatkal Passport (urgent basis): ₹3,500 approx.

  • Book a convenient appointment slot at your nearest PSK/POPSK.

4. Documents Required

Carry both originals and photocopies of the following documents:

  • Proof of Address: Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Electricity Bill, Rent Agreement, etc.

  • Proof of Date of Birth: Birth Certificate, 10th Marksheet, PAN Card, etc.

  • Identity Proof: Aadhaar, PAN, Driving License, Voter ID, etc.

  • Appointment Receipt/ARN: Printed from the portal.

(Tip: Students living in hostels/PG accommodations can use a valid rent agreement or Aadhaar with updated address.)

5. Visit to Passport Seva Kendra

  • On the appointment date, visit the PSK with your documents.

  • At the PSK, your biometric data, photograph, and signature will be captured.

  • Verification will be done at multiple counters (A, B, and C).

  • After successful submission, you will get a file number for tracking.

6. Police Verification

  • The local police station will initiate verification, usually within a week.

  • A police officer will visit your residence for address confirmation.

  • Keep your original documents handy and ensure the references provided in the form are accurate.

7. Passport Issuance

  • Once police verification is clear, the passport is printed and dispatched by speed post.

  • Normal processing: 7–21 days

  • Tatkal processing: 1–7 days

  • Status can be tracked through the Passport Seva Portal or SMS updates.

8. Tips for Newly Passed CMAs

  • Always ensure your name matches across all documents (Aadhaar, PAN, certificates).

  • Use “Student” as occupation if you haven’t yet started employment.

  • If you plan to work abroad, consider applying early as police verification and document corrections may take time.

  • Keep a digital copy of documents (PDF/JPEG) ready for online submission.

Conclusion

Getting a passport is the first step towards exploring global opportunities. With proper preparation and accurate documentation, the process is straightforward. As a newly qualified CMA, your passport is not just an identity document—it is your gateway to international exposure, employment, and professional recognition.
